Camellia's are native to eastern and southern asia from the Himalaya east to Japan and Indonesia. The Japanese sasanqua’s are very popular and tend to tolerate a sunnier position than the japonicas. They also have smaller leaves and smaller flowers.

Camellias prefer a slightly acid soil (ph 5) so don’t go adding lime around them. Consider a shadier area in the garden for japonica.

Many hybrids have been bred from crossing sasanqua and japonica, showing characteristics of both.
